Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Extraperitoneal abdominoplasty (MILEA)

MILEA is a modern technique used to remove the appendix laparoscopically without fully entering the abdominal cavity.

This procedure is less invasive compared to traditional surgery, as the appendix is accessed through small incisions in the abdominal wall, avoiding the opening of the peritoneum (the membrane surrounding the abdominal cavity).

MILEA Procedure

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, where the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdominal wall to insert the laparoscope and surgical instruments.

The appendix is accessed through the outer layers of the abdomen without opening the peritoneum, reducing the risk of complications.

After identifying the appendix, it is carefully separated from the surrounding tissue and removed. A surgical mesh is sometimes used to reinforce the area if necessary.

Finally, the small incisions are closed using sutures or surgical glue. The procedure typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity of the case. After completion, the patient is transferred to the recovery room for monitoring before being discharged from the hospital.

Benefits of MILEA

  • Reduced pain due to small incisions and avoiding the opening of the peritoneum.
  • Faster recovery: Patients can return to their daily activities sooner.
  • Minimal scarring: Small incisions leave barely visible scars.
  • Less post-operative pain.
  • Reduced complications: Such as abdominal adhesions or infections.

Medical Instructions for MILEA

  • Avoid lifting heavy weights or strenuous exercise for at least two weeks.
  • Keep the surgical area clean and dry, and avoid exposing the incisions to water in the first few days.
  • Eat easily digestible foods such as soup and yogurt in the first few days after the surgery.
  • Use painkillers as prescribed by the doctor if pain occurs.
  • Watch for redness, swelling, or discharge from the surgical area and report it immediately.
  • Visit the doctor after one to two weeks to ensure proper recovery.
  • Get adequate rest and avoid stress in the first few days after the surgery.
