MILEA is a modern technique used to remove the appendix laparoscopically without fully entering the abdominal cavity.
This procedure is less invasive compared to traditional surgery, as the appendix is accessed through small incisions in the abdominal wall, avoiding the opening of the peritoneum (the membrane surrounding the abdominal cavity).
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, where the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdominal wall to insert the laparoscope and surgical instruments.
The appendix is accessed through the outer layers of the abdomen without opening the peritoneum, reducing the risk of complications.
After identifying the appendix, it is carefully separated from the surrounding tissue and removed. A surgical mesh is sometimes used to reinforce the area if necessary.
Finally, the small incisions are closed using sutures or surgical glue. The procedure typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity of the case. After completion, the patient is transferred to the recovery room for monitoring before being discharged from the hospital.
